Rev.
Jason Tate - Bass Player

|
I began experimenting with guitar
at age 13, but by 15 I realized that the parts of songs which
resonated most deeply with me weren't the guitar - they were the
bass. I saved up for months and finally brought home my first
bass in January 1988 - a “scratch n' dent” black Ibanez
Musician. Paired with an ancient and dangerous Vox Westminster
amp, I began the fledgling steps of the journey which I am still
following after nearly 2 decades.
Today I find myself in a pretty amazing band, OMM,
comprised of myself on bass and the talented Jessie Allen on drums.
It has been liberating to explore the role of creating music with
just the foundation: drums and bass. In a way, I can play no wrong
notes, and yet in another the artistic and technical responsibility
this arrangement brings is huge! The spotlight's on me, baby...This
has led me to experiment with effects, singing, and playing “guitar”
solos. 2006 promises to be a creative year...

Musical Project Chronology
Influences
Most of my influences come from artists and sounds as a whole, as
opposed to bass players per se. Many of my major influences are listed
in my Music Links.
Current rotation includes bassists Mingus, William Parker, Chris
Wood, Ben Alison, Bill Laswell, Rob Wasserman and Laura Love. Overall
badasses include, Miles, Coltrane, Babatunde Lea, Stanton Moore, Michael
Hedges, Ani, Martin Sexton, Ozomotli, Prezident
Brown, Thievery Corporation, Gotan Project, Groove Collective,
Galactic and Greyboy Allstars. I hear new music and develop new perspectives
every day, and there's no shortage of amazing musicians out there,
as long as you look outside of the mainstream!

And something a little more recent...

The bass is bigger...but the hair is shorter.
